The City Attorney's Office serves the public interest by providing the City of Burlington with affordable, high quality proactive legal advice and representation in order to avoid unnecessary litigation. The City Attorney provides legal assistance to the City, including advice to departments, Mayor and Council; representation in legal matters; drafting or approval of legal documents, contracts, ordinances and resolutions, and the prosecution in Municipal Court of all misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor cases under City ordinances. Burlington Municipal Court. We develop and maintain standardized City contracts as well as participating as counsel in real estate transactions. Our office handles a full range of environmental issues, including the Shoreline Management Act, water resources, and long-term policy development. Primarily engaged in litigation, defending the City in personal injury and property damage cases, we also handle administrative claims filed against the City. The office is divided into two sections: one section handles civil cases and one handles criminal cases.
Scott Thomas is the City Attorney. Scott handles all the City's various civil matters. Criminal matters are handled by Craig Cammock who holds the prosecuting attorney contract. If you have questions concerning any charges filed through Burlington Municipal Court, please contact Shelley Acero, Paralegal. For information concerning any legal matter involving the City, including criminal cases, contact the City Attorney's Office and you will be directed to the appropriate party. This includes claims for damages against the City, nuisance complaints, information about City ordinances, or any other civil matter. City Attorney – Scott G. Thomas Scott began work with the City in 2004 and attends all City Council Meetings as well as various meetings throughout the City.
