Tim Van Dyken, PIO Burlington Police Department Burlington, WA Press Release May 24, 2010 Burlington Police Attains State Accreditation On May 19, 2010 the Burlington Police Department was awarded accreditation status by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC) Executive Board which was conferred to Police Chief Bill VanWieringen at WASPC's spring conference in Spokane on May 20, 2010. Burlington was one of six Washington State law enforcement agencies to receive accreditation at the spring 2010 conference including Bellingham and the Port of Seattle Police Departments from the State's northwest region. The accreditation process is intended as a way to help institutions evaluate and improve their performance. There are currently 140 established standards containing statements of professional objectives that must be met by an agency to attain accreditation. Burlington began its accreditation process years ago with the planning and design of its current police facility which was completed in 2002. A number of accreditation standards require physical structural components such as security and monitoring of evidence/property rooms, temporary holding facilities, etc. More recently many of the department's policy and procedures were re-written to facilitate standards requirements. The policy re-write process and implementation of the standards took approximately 16 months to complete. On May 6, 2010 a team of six WASPC assessment assessors and two observers conducted an on-site evaluation at the Burlington Public Safety building reviewing policy, procedures, proofs of compliance, and conducting onsite visual inspections and staff interviews. The department was found in compliance with all 140 established standards. Some proven benefits of participation in the WASPC accreditation program include: · Systemized self–assessment · Broadened perspectives · Intensified administrative and operational effectiveness · Decreased susceptibility to litigation and costly civil court settlements · Potential reduction in premiums for liability insurance · Greater public confidence in the agency · State and local acknowledgement of professional competence Burlington Police joins the Mt. Vernon and Anacortes Police Departments as WASPC accredited law enforcement agencies in Skagit County. Accreditation compliance is reviewed every four years by WASPC and departments must show continued compliance with all established standards to maintain accreditation standing.
